General Description

The Director of Education is the architect and leader of educational programming for youth, teens, and families, working in close partnership with the rabbi, the Religious Education Committee (REC), and dedicated teachers. Education is a cornerstone of Jewish life and the means through which our congregation builds lasting relationships with and among our families. With a focus on making learning and Judaism joyful and engaging, the ideal candidate will bring creativity and enthusiasm to the position. More than just an administrator, our Director of Education leads by example, seeing the gifts of every child, building a sense of pride in Judaism, and finding joy in helping others on their Jewish journey.

 

Curricular Responsibilities

  • In partnership with clergy and REC, promote the educational development of each student by overseeing, coordinating and documenting appropriate Hebrew and Judaic curricula for grades Pre-K-9
  • Effective implementation of the curricula will include: researching available resources; preparing teacher guides and other materials; reviewing all teacher lesson plans and providing feedback on both content and pedagogy as well as coordination of classroom technology while addressing the diverse, interfaith, and evolving needs of the congregation
  • In partnership with clergy and REC, plan and implement innovative family education opportunities across all grade levels, including First Fridays, Service Sundays, class retreats, and field trips
  • Manage and coordinate special school events, including Consecration and Confirmation services, Family Education programs for each grade, and school-wide holiday observances
  • Maintain Reform Jewish values while finding innovative community building strategies

 

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Articulate a clear vision for Jewish education within the congregation
  • Advocate on behalf of the religious school, students and families
  • Inspire and motivate staff, students, and families to engage deeply with the synagogue's educational mission
  • Collaborate closely with clergy and lay leadership to align educational programming with the synagogue's broader goals and initiatives, including, among other things, preparing reports to the Board and participating in Board meetings, bridging the relationships between the school and the temple
  • Participate in strategic planning and contribute to discussions about the synagogue’s future

 

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Manage all religious school staff (paid and volunteer) including: hiring, supervision, and mentoring, providing professional development opportunities, and creating a culture of collaboration among staff. This includes our vibrant Madrichim program of student classroom volunteers (ages 14-18)
  • Supervise, oversee, and execute all communication correspondence related to the school, with families, with lay leadership, and with the temple overall including a weekly religious school email blast
  • Create and manage the religious school budget, including the planning of the annual religious school calendar, benchmarking teacher purchasing and distribution of supplies, and driving grant applications when applicable
  • Manage enrollment of students and maintain files and assessments for special needs
  • Design and administer student assessments, including a formal written report card system
  • In coordination with clergy, support staff and REC, develop and enforce policies and procedures, including fire and other emergency drills

 

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree required with a preference for education or Judiacs-related fields
  • Demonstrated commitment to continued education: Master’s degree, MTEI or 

similar coursework strongly preferred 

  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Canva, and Constant Contact
  • Strong interpersonal skills, an effective communicator both written and verbal 
  • Jewish knowledge and Hebrew literacy–  must be comfortable in a Reform Jewish environment and committed to teaching through a Reform lens
  • Ability to build relationships, understand the needs of multiple stakeholders, and work collaboratively to deliver on educational goals (i.e. students, parents, clergy, lay leaders, etc.)
  • Proficient with technological trends in communication
  • Highly organized self-starter, able to manage multiple projects concurrently 
  • Ability to work a varied schedule including nights and weekends 
  • Flexibility – able to plan for the future, but also able to make adjustments as needed.

 

Benefits: 

  • Salary $65,000 to $75,000

Monmouth Reform Temple is a synagogue of approximately 350 member families, with a religious school of 100 students in coastal New Jersey. Our historic congregation has served the Jewish community of Monmouth County for over 60 years.
