ENGAGEMENT DIRECTOR ROLE OVERVIEW
The Engagement Director at North Suburban Synagogue Beth El (NSSBE) is a key member of the synagogue leadership team partnering closely and working collaboratively with NSSBE’s professional staff, lay leadership, and volunteers to engage the 1,000+ family community and connect people to each other, the synagogue, and to their Jewish identity. Key responsibilities include: guiding the membership process for current, new and perspective members, working with synagogue groups and planning synagogue-wide events.
The ideal candidate will foster individual relationships with community members and develop a deep understanding of our community. They will be a leader in creating a warm, caring and vibrant community where people feel welcome, known and valued. Create and support programs and events that engage our community spiritually, socially and intellectually and inspire them to participate in all that Beth El has to offer. An ability to embrace a flexible work schedule with the understanding that they will, at times, need to work evenings, weekends, and on holidays.
This position will report to and work in collaboration with the Executive Director.
What You’ll Do:
- Community Membership
- Create, implement and manage an Onboarding Plan for new members.
- Support program and membership marketing via flyers, emails, social media and publicity under Communications Manager.
- Assist in tracking prospective members, follow up with inquiry questions, and connecting with prospects to understand their interests and needs and inviting them to appropriate activities to learn about NSSBE and engage with the community.
- Serve as staff liaison to NSSBE Membership and Program Committee. Work with VP to write the agenda for monthly committee meetings, and collaborate to identify and attract new members as well as to engage and retain current members.
- Creates monthly membership Board reports using ShulCloud.
- Synagogue Engagement
- Meet one-on-one with members attending events, holiday celebrations, small group gatherings, and community meetings to create connections between members individually and our community as a whole.
- Connect people with existing programs, events, learning experiences and volunteer opportunities based on their interests and needs, including conducting synagogue tours as needed. Prepare others with the necessary tools to provide tours if the Engagement Director is unavailable.
- Coordinate “intentional hospitality” at programs and events.
- Assist the Clergy and Executive Director by being present at NSSBE events.
- Synagogue Logistics
- Oversee the synagogue calendar in ShulCloud.
- Manage program and membership revenue and expenses to meet budget needs.
- Work in conjunction with the Events Manager in preparation of events throughout NSSBE.
- Maintain programmatic archives to include all notes, members who were engaged with the program, and any information that could be relevant for future events.
- Facilitate College Connection program by sending out requests to college students, creating a connection with NSSBE and creating packages of items along with the membership committee.
- Gather and analyze data and seeking feedback to track people’s interest, engagement, and participation so that NSSBE can assess the effectiveness of our programming with administrative assistance.
- Communicate with professional staff and lay leadership insights about what members in our community need and are saying about their experiences at NSSBE.
- Program Planning
- Work as the staff liaison for large community programs, Ex. Shabbat on the Lake and Purim Carnival.
- Creating and implementing programs that provide meaningful opportunities for our community to connect with each other and with a Jewish life.

- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and ShulCloud database tracking software.
Benefits:
- Salary $70,000 to 80,000 based on experience.
