THE ORGANIZATION

Now at thirteen years old, The Kitchen is a San Francisco Jewish landmark institution, focused on building a stellar shabbat community, with our formula of combining a generous approach both to tradition and the wide variety of people we serve. Serving thousands locally (350 households, w/many non-members joining us every week), we also regularly advise communities, rabbis and Jews in places as far away as Jerusalem, Paris, and Berlin. 

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Kitchen is seeking an exceptional educator to join our team and teach the Kindergarten/First Grade class of our Freedom School that takes place on Shabbat mornings.

Freedom School, is our growing family school is a vibrant program of 75 students in grades K-7 and their families. Meeting approximately thirty times a year on shabbat mornings, holidays, and several times a year for service opportunities, Freedom school is integrated into our communal Kitchen shabbat experience. 

Building on our existing legacy and dedicated, joyous shabbat school community, The Kitchen seeks a Jewish Educator who is interested in the challenge of further integrating students of all ages and parents into our exceptional shabbat morning t’fillot, with the aim of increased literacy and ownership of the traditions, for parents and students alike. 

 

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES
The Kitchen is seeking a stellar educator to join our team starting in August.

  • Curricular and programmatic vision on shabbat and holidays
    • Working with Director of Family Education to create a comprehensive K-1 curriculum
    • Introduce students to Jewish traditions, holidays, prayers, and values in a fun and accessible manner
    • Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment that fosters a love for learning and respect for Jewish heritage
    • Utilize a variety of teaching methods and resources to accommodate different learning styles and abilities
    • Collaborate with other teachers and staff to ensure a cohesive and comprehensive educational experience.
    • Attend staff meetings, professional development sessions, and school events as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous experience in education, Jewish Studies, Hebrew Language, or a related field preferred
  • Previous experience teaching young children, preferably in a Hebrew school or similar setting
  • Basic knowledge of Jewish traditions
  • Classroom management skills and the ability to create a positive learning environment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Patience, creativity, and a passion for working with young children
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, parents, and community members
  • Flexibility to adapt to the needs of the students and the school

EXPECTATIONS

  • Part-time position, typically requiring approximately 3 hours teaching time on shabbat plus preparation time during the week
  • Requires Saturday mornings approximately 3 times per month from Aug - May
  • Classes take place on Jewish holidays as per the Freedom School Calender - will be shared upon applying
