Join the Lessans Camp JCC team for the summer! 

Head Counselors are responsible for working with the Unit Head to oversee the staff and campers in a unit at Lessans Camp JCC, as well as planning and implementing programs within the guidelines set by the Bender JCC of Greater Washington.

 

Core Responsibilities include:

  • Attend pre-camp meetings including unit, Leadership Team, and other scheduled meetings.
  • Fulfill all pre-camp responsibilities including assisting Unit Head with making group rosters, planning orientation sessions and reviewing activity plans.
  • Meet with nurses and Inclusion Director to obtain information needed regarding the specific needs of each camper.
  • Effectively communicate with staff, campers and families.
  • Assist in the creation and implementation of camp programs including electives, unit programs, special events, late stays, overnights and camp-wide programs.
  • Help facilitate opening every morning.
  • Mentor counselors in creating fulfilling group activities by modeling and providing ideas, suggestions and materials.
  • Utilize Yoetzet (Camp Social Worker) and Assistant Camp Director in implementing behavior management plans and work together to effectively communicate with camper families.
  • Clean equipment between uses. Take part in the daily clean-up of the program area, including putting all toys and equipment away.
  • Work with other Leadership Team staff in the arrival and dismissal of campers.
  • Substitute for absent Counselors as needed and requested.
  • Engage and actively supervise the campers in programs and activities while under the position’s care.
  • Assist with tracking staff and camper attendance.
  • Rotate with other Leadership Team members to supervise staff at the pool at designated times.
  • Assist specialists and participate in activities.
  • Prepare and present agenda items at weekly staff meetings.
  • Follow procedures of camp as mandated County, State and American Camp Association regulations.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as needed, required, or assigned.

 

Qualifications include:

  • Ability to spend your camp day outdoors and walk and travel long distances.
  • Ability to move equipment and supplies as required.
  • Current certification in CPR and First Aid.
  • Prior experience working with school aged children.
  • Ability to engage with campers and staff of all ages.
  • Ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards within the camp program.
  • Strong written and spoken language skills.

 

Must be available the entire camp season starting on June 17 going through mid-August.
