Position: Copy Editor  

Location:  U.S. or Israel (Remote position)

Role Overview:

Jewish News Syndicate (JNS), the fastest-growing news agency covering Israel and the Jewish world, is seeking a full-time Copy Editor to join our editorial team. 

The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of the US/Israel political landscape and a strong commitment to our cause, as well as a sharp eye for detail, excellent writing and editing skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced news environment. This role involves proofreading, copyediting and publishing (via WordPress) a variety of content about Israel and the Jewish world, including: opinion pieces, news articles, and press releases. The Copy Editor will also contribute to editorial meetings and collaborate closely with multiple supervisors, ensuring the highest standards of editorial quality and published content.

Job Description:

  • Fully proofread and copyedit a continuous stream of opinion pieces, briefs, news and feature articles, press releases, podcast/video teasers, and aggregated content about Israel and the Jewish world in a timely manner.
  • Submit one original bylined-opinion piece per week.
  • Screen opinion submissions for relevance and originality.
  • Fact-check, verify sources, and check for plagiarism as needed for each story.
  • Publish edited opinion pieces on JNS.org (via Wordpress) including: tagging writers with bios and headshots, sourcing photos from permissible/licensed sources, applying tags, and linking relevant JNS news stories within articles. 
  • Liaise with submitting authors and provide them with article URL immediately after publication.
  • Assist in recruiting high-quality authors to submit original opinion pieces.
  • Post published articles on various JNS social media channels.
  • Provide redundancy capability for News Desk Editor or U.S. opinion editor as required.
  • Submit occasional JNS byline news briefs upon request.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of copyediting experience at news/media publications, with expertise in US/Israel political issues, Jewish topics, and online publishing
  • NATIVE English speaker
  • Solid understanding of the Israel/US political landscape and Global/American Jewish communities
  • Proficiency in WordPress and related content-management tools
  • Strong editorial background with excellent proofreading, communication, and adherence to style guides.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Experience in fact-checking and plagiarism detection is a plus.
  • Comfortable with frequent cross-functional and senior management contact, with the ability to manage priorities for multiple supervisors such as Jerusalem Bureau Chief (submissions), Managing Editor (style) and Editor-in-Chief (final approval on editorial decisions).
  • Must reside and be eligible to legally work in Israel or the US
