Would you like to join a creative team at a growing synagogue and enjoy working with fantastic colleagues in a wonderful community? In that case, we invite you to explore the opportunity to serve as our part-time Bookkeeper. This position will report to the Executive Director.

As our Bookkeeper, you will;

  • Perform monthly financial statement reviews
  • Develop monthly forecasts
  • Issue monthly financials to the Leadership team and their departments
  • Compare budget-to-actuals and investigate differences
  • Reconcile membership categories from Shul Cloud to QuickBooks
  • Reconcile donations, especially annual fund, from Shul Cloud to QuickBooks
  • Biweekly payroll entry
  • Review and update benefit withholdings, parsonage, and retirement contributions.
  • Payroll reconciliation to QuickBooks
  • Maintain and update depreciation schedules
  • com and Divvy workflows
  • Review restricted accounts, assist with long-term financial planning and capital project plan development
  • Set up Finance Committee meetings, including agenda preparation and distribution of materials
  • Update chart of accounts in QuickBooks
  • QuickBooks budget entry

Skills or Background Needed 

Accounting & Financial Management Skills

  • Proficiency in bookkeeping principles 
  • Experience with QuickBooks and ShulCloud
  • Handling accounts payable & receivable
  • Bank reconciliations and general ledger maintenance
  • Budgeting and financial reporting for leadership and board review
  • Knowledge of nonprofit financial regulations and tax-exempt status

Administrative & Organizational Skills

  • Attention to detail in maintaining accurate financial records
  • Ability to multi-task and manage financial workflows
  • Strong data entry and record-keeping skills
  • Coordinating with vendors, staff, and congregation members for financial matters

Donations & Membership Dues Management

  • Tracking donations, pledges, and membership dues
  • Issuing contribution receipts for tax purposes
  • Ensuring proper allocation of funds for synagogue programs

Payroll & Compliance

  • Processing payroll and ensuring compliance with tax laws
  • Managing employee benefit withholdings
  • Understanding of IRS regulations for religious organizations

Communication & Teamwork

  • Ability to communicate financial matters clearly to leadership
  • Working collaboratively with synagogue administrators, clergy, and board members
  • Discretion and confidentiality in handling financial data

Compensation and Benefits 

  • $25-$27 per hour
  • 20 hours per week (negotiable)
  • Regular part-time employee
  • Pro-rated TST membership
