JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:

The Marion & Aaron Gural Jewish Community Center in Cedarhurst is creating a new community bereavement center. The Bereavement Support Specialist will be responsible to plan, implement, and maintain an array of bereavement groups and programs to meet the needs of community members who have experienced a loss. The Bereavement Support Specialist will report to the Director of Social Work and Community Support Services.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Coordinates the assessment and delivery of grief counseling needs and services, (one-to-one and groups), to ensure timely and appropriate services are provided to community members.
• Conducts in-takes, facilitates bereavement groups and plans programs as needed.
• Performs outreach to synagogues, local organizations and health care facilities.

• Provides bereavement information and referral services to callers from the community. 
• Expands and maintains community resources list as needed.
• Provide participants with a supportive environment via individual or group counseling to help them process the impact of grief.
• Help participants connect with others and begin to look towards a future with purpose and meaning.  

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

• Master’s Degree in Social Work and 5-7 years relevant experience required.
• Understanding that each person’s grief process is unique. 
• Experience with counseling individuals and/or groups regarding loss.
• Must be very familiar with Jewish customs and observance
• Must be organized, detail oriented and able to multi-task.
• Excellent writing skills and verbal communication
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office software ·
• Compassionate, creative, energetic and positive demeanor a must
