POSITION TITLE:                     Director, San Diego Coalition Against Antisemitism

FLSA STATUS:                         Exempt

REPORTS TO:                          Chief Executive Officer

DEPARTMENT:                        Community Planning

OVERVIEW

Jewish Federation of San Diego (Federation) is looking for a professional with a strong history of building relationships, communications, public relations and coalition building, to support, elevate, and align existing efforts to address antisemitism, and to develop and organize community-wide responses when appropriate.

JOB SUMMARY

The San Diego Coalition Against Antisemitism is an independent community initiative housed at Jewish Federation focused on combating antisemitism in San Diego. It serves as a collaborative platform for Jewish leaders, organizations, independent initiatives, and non-Jewish allies to coordinate strategies, share best practices, map existing efforts and fill gaps, and respond collectively when appropriate to rising antisemitism.

The Coalition Director will serve as lead staff for the Coalition, coordinating efforts among Jewish organizations to respond to and proactively prevent antisemitism. The Director will facilitate the Coalition’s work to identify and address gaps, and increase organizational coordination in San Diego around PR, working closely with communications and marketing consultants to promote positive views of the Jewish community and of Israel and to develop reactive messaging in response to antisemitic acts. The Director will engage both professionals and volunteers in identifying and acting on specific strategies addressing antisemitism across San Diego’s institutions; civic, government, media, faith, education and business. The Director will also recruit and partner with non-Jewish allies, deploying them as ambassadors and representatives.

 

The Coalition Advisory Board will be comprised of a Chair/Co-Chairs, representatives of designated organizations, as well as lay leaders who will provide advice, guidance, and support for Coalition direction and the accomplishment of stated objectives. The Director will work in close partnership with this board, and will report on a day-to-day basis to the Jewish Federation President and CEO.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as a central point of contact for Coalition members, fostering communication and collaboration among diverse stakeholders.
  • Work closely with communications firm to develop and implement strategic communication plans to and to create proactive PR efforts to facilitate more positive messaging and to address antisemitic incidents and events.
  • Implement a coordinated, comprehensive approach to strengthening our community’s response to antisemitism including protocols, procedures, and tools to help guide our community’s real-time reactions.
  • Develop comprehensive knowledge of current resources and approaches to combat antisemitism and create mechanisms to discover and share information about incidents of antisemitism.
  • Oversee regular convening of Coalition members to strategize and coordinate responses to antisemitic incidents, initiatives, and vulnerabilities, including with public statements, PR initiatives, and other constructive actions.
  • Coordinate and convene Coalition Advisory Board in partnership with chair/co-chairs.
  • Recruit and engage strategic non-Jewish allies through leveraged existing and new relationships to support the Jewish community and advocate against antisemitism.
  • Foster partnerships with community organizations, educational institutions, and other stakeholders and allies to amplify the Coalition's impact.
  • Work with Coalition members to identify and advocate for policies and initiatives that combat antisemitism and promote tolerance and inclusion in the community.
  • Engage community members in dialogue, forums and meaningful conversations that lead to greater understanding and empowerment.

EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS

  • Demonstrated skill and experience in strategic communications, crisis management, and media relations.
  • Meaningful experience in working in complex, multi-stakeholder environments
  • Excellent facilitation, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and collaborate with diverse stakeholders, give direction, and drive action.
  • Strong understanding of antisemitism, its historical context, and contemporary manifestations.
  • Awareness of the range of Jewish community organizations, especially those that are active in or concerned about community relations.
  • Skilled in leading conversations with people who hold a diverse range of opinions on key issues in an open and respectful manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to build meaningful and trusting relationships with colleagues, and to work strategically and collaboratively across organizations.

EDUCATION

Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., communications, sociology, political science) required; master's or other graduate degree preferred (including MBA, JD, or masters in related field).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND EQUIPMENT

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, and talk or hear. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The employee must occasionally crouch, stoop, or reach.  The employee must have the ability to travel and work weekends and evenings when needed (if applicable). This position is required to work onsite (with the ability to work from home on most Fridays).

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

This is a full-time position, working onsite in San Diego, CA, with the ability to work from home on most Fridays.

Compensation range: $125,000 - $145,000 per year, with a generous benefits plan, retirement plan and comprehensive paid sick leave, vacation and 22 paid holidays per year.
