Summary

Temple Israel of the City of New York is seeking a strategic, detail-oriented Director of Finance to lead day-to-day financial management and accounting operations.

The Director of Finance is responsible for monthly financial reporting for management and the Finance Committee, as well as quarterly reporting for the Board of Trustees. They collaborate with clergy and department/school heads to produce tailored reports and financial insights, and help set financial goals, metrics, and benchmarks. The role also includes oversight of banking, account reconciliations, and key vendor relationships.

The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in finance and accounting, excellent communication skills, advanced Excel proficiency, and experience working with accounting software in a PC environment.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Planning & Operations

  • Oversee daily, monthly, and year-end accounting procedures and documentation.
  • Maintain monthly cash flow projection reports for management and Finance Committee review.
  • Prepare and present monthly financial statements (Balance Sheet, Budget vs. Actuals/Forecast).
  • Maintain and track vendor contracts, ensuring compliance with terms and timely payments.
  • Manage Donor Restricted and Endowment Funds in accordance with donor guidelines.
  • Report fund disbursements to management and the Finance Committee.

Budget Planning & Management

  • Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with the Executive Director, clergy, and department/school heads.
  • Ensure timely budget development and review by management and Finance Committee.
  • Present and explain financial reports and budget performance to lay leadership and senior staff.
  • Participate in financial planning meetings across departments.

Human Resources Oversight

  • Oversee benefits administration, payroll withholdings, and coordination with ADP Total Source (PEO).
  • Ensure timely and effective HR communication to all staff.
  • Support training and professional development for finance staff.
  • Maintain and update the Employee Handbook on ADP.

Daily Accounting Operations

  • Supervise and delegate responsibilities to finance staff, including:
    • Payroll
    • Accounts Receivable and Payable
    • Banking (collections and payments)
    • Credit card accounting
    • ShulCloud and payment platforms (checks, credit cards, online)
    • Monthly book closings
  • Serve as primary contact for external auditors.
  • Implement and enforce financial policies and procedures.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Maintain strong working relationships with school administrators, clergy, and Temple staff.
  • Ensure clear and timely communication regarding financial procedures and HR matters.
  • Respond to HR-related inquiries efficiently and professionally.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in accounting or financial management.
  • Prior experience in a nonprofit and/or religious institution preferred.
  • Proven management experience, including team supervision and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and strong general technology skills.
  • Experience with enterprise reporting systems and accounting software.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational, prioritization, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities.

Language Skills

  • Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively in grammatically correct English.

Compensation & Work Environment

  • Salary Range: $115,000–$130,000
  • Work Setting: Hybrid
  • Job Type: Full-Time
