Job Opening for Part-Time Education Director
Tentative Start Date: July 1, 2025
MakomNY – Bethpage, NY

The Education Director will report to Rabbi Bravo and will primarily oversee MakomNY’s Moadon (K-7 school) program, with additional responsibilities for Family Programs.

Primary Role of Education Director at Makom:

  • Running a supplemental school of approximately 260 students and 10+ teachers.
  • Hiring, supervising and supporting the team, including regular meetings and ongoing correspondence and dialogue.
  • Overseeing Moadon volunteers who help with administration during school hours.
  • Serving as a classroom teacher during Moadon sessions.
  • Creating big picture curriculum development and lesson planning on a week-to-week basis for the large group programs.
  • Sending weekly emails to parents in reflection of each week, and other necessary communication.
  • Giving direction to the Assistant Director in terms of ongoing communication with parents, responding to their questions and giving guidance to their logistic questions. Responding directly to parents and students with regard to Hebrew, content, education and classes, as well as building relationships with parents and helping to create a parent community.
  • Overseeing registration for students, and working in partnership with Assistant Director in overseeing all of the administrative aspects of the registration process.
  • Planning the overall budget for Moadon, in coordination with Rabbi Bravo.

Responsibilities with respect to Family Engagement:

  • Coordinating and attending all family programs, approximately 6 programs annually on Shabbat afternoons (or a better time decided upon) for students K-7th grades.
  • Creating content for these family programs.
  • Hiring staff for family programs (typically from our teaching staff).
  • Reaching out to families to encourage attendance at family programs.
  • Building relationships with families and helping to create and sustain a culture of ongoing family connection and commitment.

General Role of Educator at Makom:

  • Be a part of the MakomNY Leadership Team and an integral part of the MakomNY community.
  • Attend monthly Advisory Council Meetings and interact with lay leaders
  • Attend Shabbat services as a leader of the Makom Community.
  • Participate in community programs, as determined.

Education/Skills/Experience:

  • Trained as a Jewish Educator through one of the liberal Jewish programs
  • Experience in being an Educator/Director in a liberal congregation
  • Ability to administer, supervise and create curriculum
  • Openness and willingness to engage with a community with diverse Jewish experiences and connections

Overview of Schedule for Daily/Weekly/Monthly Activities:

  • During the School Year (September 2025 – May 2026), the following will be the general flow of the calendar (in-person attendance required), approximately 25-30 hours/week.
    • Tuesday afternoons for K-2nd grades and 3rd-5th grades
    • Wednesday afternoons and evenings for 3rd-5th grades and then 6th-7th grades
    • Saturday afternoons (or as otherwise scheduled) for family programs (as calendared)
  • Additional programs/events (in-person attendance)
    • Regular presence at Friday Shabbat services
    • Regular holiday participation when available
  • Other time will be used for planning programs and connecting with participants and parents (may be a combination of in-person and remote, as determined with Rabbi Bravo).

Salary and Benefits:

  • Salary Range from $50,000-$60,000
  • Vacation – flexible, at least 4 weeks
