Role Overview

Maryland Hillel seeks a creative and outgoing professional with strong interpersonal, communication, and project management skills to serve as the Manager of Student Leadership. This individual will be a team player with an entrepreneurial spirit and a proven track record of working with students to enhance leadership development. They will be a natural relationship builder with experience in leadership development, education, and/or entrepreneurship, complemented by a passion for Jewish life and involvement in the Jewish community.

Working within a dynamic programming team, the Manager of Student Leadership will lead the development and implementation of a comprehensive leadership and engagement strategy to reach the university's Jewish student population. A core aspect of the role involves collaborating closely with student leaders and engaging students to create opportunities for building Jewish community. This position requires both independent initiative and teamwork to foster meaningful student connections and leadership growth.

What You’ll Do

  • In collaboration with the Assistant Director, determine goals and outcomes for student leadership development.
  • Empower student volunteer leaders by equipping them with the training, tools, and resources to create impactful programs while implementing a strategic, outcomes-driven leadership development curriculum for the 30+ groups affiliated with Maryland Hillel.
  • Identify and nurture emerging leaders in the Jewish community at Maryland and, in collaboration with other staff, create opportunities to develop their skills.
  • Plan and staff 1-2 immersive leadership retreats per academic year.
  • Manage Maryland Hillel’s delegations to several national conferences each year.
  • Directly advise a select number of student groups, determined in collaboration with the Assistant Director.
  • Oversee Maryland Hillel’s fellowship programs.
  • Nurture partnerships with the community of leadership development professionals on campus to expand Hillel’s network and resources available to our students.
  • Build relationships! Form deeper connections through listening and empathy to learn more about students and their Jewish journeys. 
  • Participate in ongoing Jewish learning and professional development.
  • Using social media as a vehicle as a creative outlet for students to engage with Hillel.
  • Serve as a staff member on immersive experiences such as Birthright Israel and alternative breaks.

Who You Are

  • A passionate advocate for Jewish life with the ability to inspire and engage others.
  • Experienced in student leadership development theory and practice is preferred, but not required.
  • Skilled at networking and building meaningful relationships with a diverse range of people.
  • Highly organized, able to multitask, and comfortable in a fast-paced environment.
  • Capable of meeting strict deadlines and managing important financial information.
  • A strong leader with entrepreneurial energy and a proactive mindset.
  • Committed to empowering students to create meaningful and personal Jewish experiences.
  • Enthusiastic about collaborating and contributing as part of a large, dynamic staff team

What You’ll Bring to the Job

  • A bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years in Jewish non-profit work, experiential or higher education. 
  • Knowledge of what makes people tick - you can connect people’s passions and interests to Hillel’s mission.
  • Comfort in managing teams as well as working independently and collaboratively.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit - things may not always go according to plan, but you understand that ambiguity is part of developing great new opportunities.
  • A commitment to pluralism and comfort with your Jewish identity so you may act as a role model and mentor for emerging Jewish adults.

  • Salary range is $55-65k commensurate with experience.

About Maryland Hillel

Maryland Hillel, located in College Park, MD in close proximity to Washington, DC, enjoys a national reputation for its Jewish community, both due to its size with some 5,800 Jewish undergrads, and, more critically, due to the vibrancy of Jewish life on campus. A team of 9 professionals work in concert with Jewish students to facilitate a veritable menu of experiences and opportunities.
