Akiva School, Nashville’s only Jewish Day School, is seeking energetic, creative, and skillful educators to join our incredible team of dynamic teachers. We have openings in both General Studies and Jewish Studies, and we are looking for passionate educators dedicated to academic excellence and fostering student identity as both Jews and Americans in the world.

Ideal candidates will be experienced in elementary and/or middle school education and 

Skilled at differentiating instruction to support students with a variety of learning profiles. Candidates should be committed to student-centered, research-based teaching practices and must be strong communicators who work collaboratively with colleagues, students, and parents

For Jewish Studies educators, fluency in Hebrew and experience teaching Ivrit B’Ivrit are required. Familiarity with the Tal-Am curriculum and experience with special education are a plus.

Responsibilities (General & Jewish Studies)

  • Support the family-centered environment that Akiva fosters.
  • Plan and implement engaging, high-quality instruction that actively involves students in the learning process.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of students with diverse learning styles, strengths, and areas for growth.
  • Promote a positive classroom environment and demonstrate strong classroom management to ensure high levels of learning for all students.
  • Assess student performance formally and informally, maintaining up-to-date records and communicating progress to students, parents, and support staff.
  • Collaborate with faculty, support staff, and administration to contribute to a thoughtful and dynamic educational team.
  • Integrate interdisciplinary learning when appropriate, ensuring that both General Studies and Jewish Studies curricula support student growth holistically.
  • Use a project-based learning approach and, when applicable, a STEAM model with a focus on the engineering and design process.
  • Perform professional duties efficiently, manage resources effectively, and meet deadlines set by the school.
  • Share in the supervision of duties outside the classroom, including lunch, recess, and end-of-day responsibilities.
  • Attend faculty meetings, required training, and after-school events.
  • Work collaboratively to develop and implement curricular initiatives aligned with Akiva’s mission.
  • Respect and foster an environment of openness to multiple perspectives, embracing the diversity of observance within the school community.

 

General Studies Specific Responsibilities

  • Teach core subjects using Akiva’s General Studies curriculum, including:
  • Reading, writing, language arts, math, social studies, and science
  • Implement the Writer’s Workshop model, including one-on-one conferencing to support student growth in writing.
  • Maintain a student-centered approach and apply research-based best practices in instruction.

 

Jewish Studies Specific Responsibilities

  • Teach Hebrew and Jewish Studies to multiple grade levels, using a full Ivrit B’Ivrit approach (teaching Hebrew and Jewish subjects in Hebrew).
  • Lead and teach Tefillah (daily prayer), weekly Shabbat celebrations, and holiday observances within the school.
  • Instill a love for Judaism, the Jewish people, Israel, and Israeli culture in students and families.
  • Work with faculty to develop and implement the Ivrit curriculum, identifying key texts and resources that align with Akiva’s mission.
  • Stay current with best practices in Jewish education and contribute to the continuous improvement of the curriculum.

 

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in education or related field required
  • MA in education or related field preferred
