Job Opening for Part-Time Cantor for A Growing Community on Long Island

Tentative Start Date: July 1, 2025

MakomNY: A New Model for Jewish Community

Role of Cantor at Makom:

  • Be a part of the MakomNY Leadership Team and an integral part of the MakomNY community
  • Attend monthly Advisory Council Meetings and interact with lay leaders
  • Assist the Rabbi in pastoral and life cycle events, as available
  • Join with the Rabbi in leading services on approximately 18 Friday nights throughout the year, plus High Holy Day and holiday services
  • Co-lead approximately 45-50 B’nai Mitzvah services for MakomNY B’nai Mitzvah families
  • Participate in planning and facilitating annual Tu B’shevat Seder, Women’s Seder and Community Seder with Rabbi
  • Work with assigned B’nai Mitzvah students, as divided with other staff; get to know each of the B’nai Mitzvah and their families prior to the B’nai Mitzvah celebrations
  • Work in our Hebrew School teaching some of our Hebrew school students – perhaps in T’fillah, or trope, or those who love to sing
  • Coordinate an annual fundraising concert (or more) to bring music to our community
  • Create an adult and/or teen choir ‘lishma’, simply for the sake of enjoying music

Education/Skills/Experience:

  • Trained at one of the mainstream cantorial programs in an accredited program
  • Experience in leading a liberal congregation in song and prayer
  • Knowledge and experience in both traditional and contemporary Jewish liturgy
  • Ability to work with an accompanist/musical director and a band
  • Openness and willingness to engage with a community with diverse Jewish experiences and connections

Monthly Calendar:

  • Fridays – Services 1-2x/month; welcome to attend or host any Shabbat dinners.
  • Saturdays – approximately 3 weekends of the month in September-June are B’nai Mitzvah; no Saturdays when no B’nai Mitzvah – July and August very quiet
  • Occasional – Women’s Seder; Community Seder; holiday observances

Possible additional responsibilities:

  • Lead a choir ‘lishma’ weekly or bi-weekly or monthly, for adults or teens or both, simply for the fun of creating a choir community, perhaps ‘performing’ occasionally, if interested
  • Join the teaching staff on Wednesday evenings as part of the 6th/7th grade teaching team, teaching trope and high-level prayers to our older students, and working on leading t’fillah
  • Monthly Nursing Home visits at local Home
  • Annual teaching at JCC – seniors
  • Interfaith and greater community programming
  • Open to other new ideas and programs.
  • Healing Services monthly.
  • Teaching adults (if desired).

 Salary and Benefits:

  • Salary Range from $60,000-$80,000
  • Vacation – flexible, at least 4 weeks
  • Professional Development – happy to support reasonable attendance at conferences, meetings, books and resources
