Executive Director

Overview
The Executive Director is responsible for all day-to-day operations of the synagogue and for strategic planning related to the synagogue’s membership growth and welfare. The successful candidate is a personable and experienced manager motivated to assume a key leadership role in supporting our dynamic and welcoming congregation
Mission Statement Congregation Ner Tamid, a Conservative synagogue, is a welcoming and inclusive Jewish community that enhances member lives through education, prayer, Tikkun Olam, social and cultural events, and lifecycle support. Areas of responsibility:
The Executive Director reports directly to the President of the Board of Trustees. Working with the Rabbi, Cantor, Director of Education & Youth and Early Childhood Education Director, the Executive Director has the following responsibilities:
1.Administration and Operations:
• Responsible for all ongoing synagogue operations and for providing logistical support to the Rabbi and program staff consistent with the synagogue’s priorities and vision.
• Supervises administrative, custodial, and catering personnel and oversees office administration.
• Develops, updates, and implements office policies and procedures.
• Maintains all office systems.
• Manages all internal operating and software systems, including ShulCloud.
• Provides administrative support to the Board of Directors and committees.
• Manages the physical campus issues and security, including overseeing security, systems, and physical enhancements, as well as management of 3rd party security services.
• Oversees the use of a kosher kitchen.
• Manages contracts and vendor relationships.
• Must be available for after-hours synagogue events and emergencies.
2. Finances and Human Resources:
• Understands financial management and basic accounting principles and ensures that fiscal controls and procedures are adhered to.
• Implements Board’s policies for allocation and distribution of funds.
• Negotiates vendor contracts.
• Supervises and evaluates administrative staff.
• Assists in the preparation of the annual budget in consultation with the Treasurer, Rabbi, and staff.
• Oversees payments to vendors and reviews payroll.
• Maintains employee files, ensures annual personnel reviews are conducted, coordinates annual updating of the Employee Handbook and relevant financial and HR policies and ensures that administrative job descriptions are current.
3. Major Events and High Holy Days:
• Responsible for all logistics and administrative tasks for High Holy Days. Includes coordination of external vendors, staff assignments and lay leadership involvement.
• Oversees all events scheduled on campus throughout the year.
4. Membership & Development:
• Provides initial contact with prospective and new members.
• Coordinates the annual membership renewal process.
• Supports membership recruitment.
• Assists in strategic planning for growth and membership retention.
• Works with lay and professional leadership in donor development to coordinate and support fundraising efforts.
• Attends CNT events, as reasonable, to support membership engagement.
5. Portfolio Management
• Supervises the Building Manager, who is responsible for all facility operations including building maintenance and repair.
• Coordinates with external IT service provider on computer systems and technology.
• Oversees synagogue and community communications via electronic and print media.
• Helps to promote Ner Tamid in the larger community by representing Ner Tamid at appropriate
community, regional, and national groups, or organizations.
• Maintains records including membership data, newsletters, Board minutes, financial data, personnel records, vendor contracts and contacts, and synagogue policies and practices.
Required Experience:
• Relevant Bachelor’s degree or certificate in non-profit management.
• Ability to prioritize, make decisions quickly and exercise initiative and sound judgment
• Minimum five years relevant experience in organizational management that includes managing staff, volunteers, programs, and events.
• Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
• Basic understanding in financial management, budgeting and reporting, and internal controls.
• Computer skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, QuickBooks and digital communications.
Required Capabilities:
• Operational experience with ShulCloud synagogue management system
• Positive attitude, approachable, functions with clarity, transparency, and integrity.
• Able to build and sustain relationships with diverse constituencies.
• Able to foster collaboration, build consensus and create win-win interactions.
• Strong written and oral communications skills.
• Ability to think strategically about topics of importance to Ner Tamid now and in the future.
• Familiar with Jewish ritual, holiday, and lifecycle traditions.
Desirable:
• Operational experience with ShulCloud synagogue management system
• Experience working in a nonprofit environment.
• Experience/exposure working for or volunteering with a synagogue or other Jewish service organization.
• Involvement in fundraising campaigns.
