Bolton Street Synagogue, a progressive Reform Jewish congregation in Baltimore City, seeks a Director of Education for approximately 20 hours per week beginning June 2020. The Director will oversee the Sunday morning religious school program of nearly 70 students and will partner closely with the Rabbi, faculty, Parent Committee, and lay leadership to develop and implement the vision for the school.
The goal of educational programming at Bolton Street Synagogue is to engage our children, youth and families in all aspects of Jewish life, helping them create strong bonds with one another, the congregational community, and the Jewish people as a whole. Jewish educators with leadership experience who are creative and collaborative, as well as optimistic and passionate about Judaism, Israel, and Jewish peoplehood are encouraged to apply.

Duties and Responsibilities:
o Establish a warm, welcoming, safe, and inclusive environment and a culture of living Judaism
o Partner with Parent Committee to strengthen the school and advance synagogue mission
o Recruit, supervise, and manage teaching staff of seven teachers and seven madrichim
o Develop grade curricula and Hebrew curricula to ensure effective implementation
o Advise faculty about lesson planning, classroom management strategies, and curriculum
o Coordinate school-related Shabbat services and holiday celebrations
o Oversee and lead High Holy Day programming for youth and families
o Collaborate with Rabbi in programming for young families including Tot Shabbats and Tot Time
o Publicize activities through open houses, newsletters articles, social media, and letters to parents
o Advise and support youth group activities and coordinate with regional NFTY
o Be a positive public face of Bolton Street Synagogue
o Procure supplies and learning materials
o Manage registration
o Other duties as assigned
The Director must be present on Sundays 8:30AM-12:30PM during the school year. Some Friday evenings, Saturday, and holiday commitments. Expectations to be onsite during the week, with some flexibility in days/times during normal business hours. This is a 12-month position.
The Director will hold a Bachelor’s degree and have a background in Jewish education; a demonstrated involvement in and passion for Jewish life; a commitment to liberal Judaism, pluralism, and the values thereof; strong organizational skills; excellent interpersonal skills; competence in Hebrew; and at least three years’ teaching experience.
