The Children's Youth Programs Coordinator is responsible for direct service in the Kindergarten through fifth grade youth programming, Vacation camps, School Holiday programs, KidZone (after school care), Special events, and Kids Nite Out. Summer responsibilities include directing Camp Kaleidescope, coordinating all Jr. Specialty camps located at Merfish Teen Center, and all the planning and preparation for these programs.
I. PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT
a. Create and implement direct service programs for kindergarten through fifth grade.
b. Oversee and expand the KidZone program (after school program) and transportation
i. Manage bus routes, ensure counselors are on buses, and lists for buses are correct
ii. Supervise all KidZone staff and ensure proper coverage at programs
iii. Plan and implement the KidZone daily schedule
iv. Ensure all students get to the appropriate enrichment classes and activities
v. Communicate effectively with parents about issues, schedule changes, etc.
vi. Handle behavior scenarios that are beyond the counselors’ abilities to control
vii. Coordinate with homework room to order any necessary supplies
c. Organize & plan all school holiday programs for elementary-aged children, including HISD half-day programs
d. Work with J Camps assistant director to develop, staff, and implement vacation camps
e. Develop and coordinate monthly Saturday evening Kids Nite Out program for school age children.
f. Organize, plan, and implement J-Serve teen social action program along with community partners
g. Summer responsibilities:
i. Plan, staff, and direct Camp Kaleidescope (1st-3rd grade traditional camp)
ii. Act as on-site director for all camps at Merfish (Kaleidescope, assorted junior specialty camps)
h. All program assignments will include the following components:
i. Customer service
ii. Effective marketing and recruitment
iii. Program scheduling and room reservations
iv. Program supervision, including staff, facilities, etc.
v. Communication with parents/families/participants
vi. Program evaluation
i. All other duties as assigned by the Department Director
II. AGENCY EXPECTATIONS
a. Participate in J Special events when necessary
b. Attend all staff meetings
c. Schedule to be Monday-Friday and adjusted accordingly when work on a weekend (Saturday or Sunday) to take off time during the week
a. Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent required
b. Previous experience working with children ages Kindergarten through 5th grade, preferably including camp
c. Management experience preferred
d. Organized and self-starter
f. Good communication skills
g. Proficient in Word, Excel, and other Microsoft programs
h. Ability to lift 15-20lbs and be on his/her feet for extended periods of time
i. Must be available to work at least one Saturday evening a month and occasional Sundays
j. Must be able to relate to children ages 5 and up, parents, adult participants and volunteers, and lay leadership
