The Shalom Hartman Institute seeks a Senior Development and Philanthropic Engagement Officer who will play a key role in building relationships with new individual donors and institutional funders to further SHI NA’s strategic, programmatic, and philanthropic goals.  Focused on the San Francisco Bay Area, as well as Los Angeles, San Diego, and Seattle, this individual will cultivate a deep understanding of the interests of SHI NA’s target audiences as well as a thorough grasp of the programmatic resources and scholarship the Institute offers.

A successful candidate will be a creative and motivated self-starter, and will manage donor prospecting, plan ongoing donor/prospect events and meetings, manage strategic stakeholder engagement, and promote and recruit for the Hartman Giving Society and Board of Directors across the region. Ideally, this candidate will bring at least 8 years of direct fundraising and major donor programmatic engagement experience with a demonstrated ability to manage relationships, solicit major gifts, and plan and execute special events. Regular regional travel as well as occasional travel to New York and Israel expected.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identify, engage, solicit, steward, and cultivate a robust portfolio of new major individual, foundation, and institutional funders giving $10k-$1M
  • Curate and launch local engagement and fundraising events; serve as the lead project manager for all events including the planning and execution of short-term seminars and VIP learning opportunities; develop guest lists and oversee recruitment and coordinate with event hosts
  • Deploy SHI executive leadership, program staff, and faculty from North America and Israel through curated learning opportunities, private engagements, and speaking tours designed to engage new potential funders
  • Support various fundraising efforts of specialized campaigns including annual, Board, capital, and planned giving
  • Identify and recruit potential members from the West Coast to the Hartman Board of Directors
  • Recruit new and steward existing participants toward premier Hartman engagement programs including the annual Community Leadership Program (CLP) and the Hartman Giving Society as well as local and lay leadership educational initiatives
  • Liaise with local Rabbis, Synagogues, Federations, Foundations, leadership networks, and program alumni to raise awareness and engagement

 Qualifications & Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree with 8+ years of direct fundraising and programmatic engagement experience
  • Demonstrated success closing major gifts of five and six-figures
  • Professional, resourceful, and entrepreneurial
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated project management and problem-solving skills
  • High-level strategic thinking and efficiency planning; ability to meet goals and objectives in a timely manner
  • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Capable of working independently and as part of a team
  • Familiarity with the Jewish philanthropic landscape in North America and on the West Coast specifically
  • Passion for the mission of the Shalom Hartman Institute
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and donor management software; Salesforce experience a plus
  • Ability to staff occasional evening and weekend programs

This position is remote but candidates must live in the San Francisco Bay or Los Angeles areas.
